This is a six-week introduction to robotics class using Scratch block-based programming language and the Finch educational robot created by Carnegie Mellon University. This class also uses the paired programming method in which students work collaboratively in teams of two. Lessons include an introduction to Finch, using the Finch with Scratch, remote controlling a robot, sensory feedback and information processing. Instruction, unplugged activities and hands-on projects that use coding, mathematics and problem solving include:

  1. Motors, movement, distance and loops
  2. LEDs and RGB color model
  3. Sounds and frequencies
  4. Remote control robot tag
  5. Temperature sensing and converting
  6. Obstacle and light sensing, boolean variables, conditionals

Prerequisites

  • Youth ages 9 and above
  • Experience with keyboard and mouse
  • YouthCode beginner Scratch class or prior experience with Scratch
  • Completed online registration form

Scratch is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab and is available for free at scratch.mit.edu
