This is a four-week pilot introduction to robotics class by invitation only. There is no registration fee but completing online registration for each student is required. (Click the register button below.)

Class Objectives

  • Provide another opportunity to engage students age 9+ in coding and related technologies

  • Introduce students to basics of robotics through hands-on enrichment experiences

  • Introduce students to paired programming method

  • Leverage Scratch knowledge and existing resources

Lesson Plan

This class will use the Finch educational robot created by Carnegie Mellon University. This will also be YouthCode's first class using the paired programming method in which students work collaboratively in teams of two. The current lesson plan involves four progressive weeks of instruction, unplugged activities and hands-on projects:

  1. Introduction to Finch and using Finch with Scratch
  2. Remote controlling a robot
  3. Sensory feedback and information processing
  4. Coding an autonomous robot

Why A Pilot Class?

Pilots are traditionally initial implementations used to prove the viability of an idea, project, program, etc. As a pilot class, our goal is to test the curriculum we are developing while your student(s) are introduced to the basics of robotics. Experiences from the pilot will enable us to make adjustments before including the class in the YouthCode portfolio. We see this class as potentially being the first robotics class of more to come.

Please don't hesitate to contact Tim with questions and your feedback is always welcome! Thanks for trusting us with the privilege of sharing knowledge with your students!

YouthCode is a program of Impacting The Next Generation Project, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
